SoupandBread

Peterson Garden Project’s Cookbook Club is all the best parts of a potluck, book club and dinner party! Make a dish from this month’s book, bring it to the dinner (along with a bottle of wine or beer, if you’d like!), meet new people, try new recipes, discuss the cookbook and enjoy the company of your fellow diners. Learn more!

Begun in 2009, the Soup & Bread series at Chicago’s Hideout features recipes from well-known Chicago chefs such as Paul Kahan, the James Beard-bedecked maestro behind Blackbird and Avec, and Stephanie Izard, winner of Bravo’s Top Chef) as well as a range of nonprofessional soup enthusiasts. The recipes in the Soup & Bread Cookbook are all culled from Soup & Bread, resulting in a collection that is diverse in scope but uniformly delicious.

The book is organized into categories such as “Soup From Home,” “Soup That Shines,” “Chili For Competition,” and “Soup for (More Than) Sustenance,” and ends with a set of basic stock recipes. Throughout, Bayne weaves in stories of soup kitchens, soup swaps, and soup-driven art, showcasing how people all over the U.S. use soup to further social outreach, foster community, and help others.

A portion of the proceeds from sales of the Soup & Bread Cookbook will be donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

This event is BYOB. Copies of the book are available at the Chicago Public Library.

This event is part of 30 Days of Doing, our fall event series from October 15 to November 15 featuring garden and cooking classes, volunteer opportunities, community engagement, and more to support our mission to teach everyone how to grow and cook their own food! View the full list of events.

HOW DOES COOKBOOK CLUB WORK?

  • After registering, you’ll receive a link to a Google doc along so you can add:
    • the name of the recipe(s) you’re planning to make
    • if oven or stove space is needed for reheating/keeping a dish warm
  • As much as possible, we stick to the recipe as written.
  • We meet, we eat, we drink (BYO). We talk about the recipes we made, what worked and what didn’t, what other recipes we want to try (or have tried).
  • We pick a cookbook for the next meeting.

Grow2Give Garden Gleaning @ Peterson Garden Project Community Gardens
Nov 6 – Nov 12 all-day

Join us for the annual end-of-season garden gleaning! While we dedicate anywhere from 5-25% of the plots in the gardens to growing food exclusively for our neighborhood pantries, at the end of the season we harvest excess produce from our member’s plots, just in time for Thanksgiving!

If you have still-producing crops such as herbs, kale, and carrots and would rather donate your last harvest to neighbors in need, leave everything in your PGP garden plot and we’ll harvest in the week after the gardens close. In years past, this has added up to a few hundred pounds of food!

Interested in helping out? We welcome help from volunteers of all skill levels to harvest, wash, weigh, package/label and deliver food. Choose a garden/time below!

These kits were generously assembled and donated by Humana, and contain all of the items needed for harvesting and packaging produce for our partners. Each contains produce bags, labels, rubber bands, work gloves, markers, water, and snips!
